This classic was the first cookery book I bought after becoming a vegetarian back in 1984. A staple in my culinary collection to this day, Ms. Brown’s book gave me the basic knowledge I needed to make the “veggie-transition” in a healthy way. It contains all the basic nutrition guidelines in “Essentials”, some foundational cooking recipes in “Techniques”, and diet recommendations in “Choosing a Balanced Diet”. It also has a comprehensive Glossary which is a fantastic resource for all those not so frequently used items. It is however primarily a cookbook, and this vegetarian classic of course also serves up a stew (pun intended) of terrific, flavorful recipes that I still enjoy today. The Lenten Bake is one of my favorites that I’ve relied on for years when I need a warm, tasty and hearty meal.
